Top 5 Ways To Get That Hollywood Look

Posted on Feb 18, 2009 by Andrew in Celebrity Diets & Workouts, Featured .

Ryan ReynoldsThis post was spurred by our friend Grant who is interested in a comprehensive guide for getting that Hollywood look. This is something that I personally strive for in my workout and meal plan and I know that most of you would like the same results. It requires a precise attention to detail and a little know how, but once you get the hang of it as a life plan, all you need is consistency!

Eat Your Vegetables And Fruit Or Don’t Even Bother

We’re always looking for shortcuts and ways of getting around things to attain our goals. But I’m sorry to say that there is simply no substitution for getting a wide variety of vegetables and fruits in your diet. And it’s not just about the nutrients found in fruits and veggies that are necessary for muscle growth (CDC):

You can create lower-calorie versions of some of your favorite dishes by substituting low-calorie fruits and vegetables in place of higher-calorie ingredients. The water and fiber in fruits and vegetables will add volume to your dishes, so you can eat the same amount of food with fewer calories.”

Understanding how this substitution benefits your weight loss will be key in the second component of reaching your goal of a Hollywood physique.

Drop Bad Eating Habits And Develop Good Eating Habits

Anything worth doing is worth doing right. So drop out processed foods and restructure your new meal plan to revolve around at least 95% whole foods. Humans were not meant to mess with the food that the planet provides and if you want that lean physique, you won’t mess with processed foods either.

Another key component in developing good eating habits is understanding that at the present, you are eating too much. Do you know how I know that? Because you’re consulting an article about attaining a physique that you currently do not have. And you know what? That’s totally ok!

No one has the answers, or results for that matter, by virtue of following their instincts. In this case, our instincts happen to be counter intuitive to our goals. As history has shown us, our survival as early humans was contingent on hoarding energy in the form of calories whenever we could because we used to live in an environment of scarcity. That isn’t the case in the modern world, so don’t eat like it is!

Forget Everything You Thought You Knew About Cardio

Sprints yield physiques. Period, scoreboard, end of story. Take a look at Usain Bolt (the world’s greatest sprinter) and then take a look at Haile Gebrselassie (the world’s greatest marathon runner). Between these two, who would you like to look like?

usain_boltHaile G

How about football players? Do you see them jogging much or are they doing sprints? Ok, you get the point. So switch out the chronic, steady state cardio and start doing sprints at the local park or even on the treadmill at the gym.

Weight Lifting Should Be A Staple In Your Workout Routine

While bodyweight circuits can help build a lean, muscular look, the most tried and true component of fitness for that Hollywood look has always been lifting weights. But how you go about it is very important (Fitness Black Book):

Many people need to change their idea of a good workout. The idea should be to work up a sweat while getting stronger and burning off body fat. This can be done with just a few quality sets and 1-2 different lifts per body part…blitzing a muscle group will just force you to rest more days in between workouts and will lead to slower strength gains.”

Remember, “blitzing” a muscle group, as Rusty calls it, is a technique used for body builders who are looking to increase their size. The Hollywood look is about getting a lean, muscular physique with much less mass than your typical body builder.

Jessica BielBe Willing To Make Changes When Necessary

This is arguably the most important part of the process because it encompasses all of the other components. Trust me when I say that you will not stumble on to the perfect balance of healthy eating and working out the first time around. It takes time, an understanding of your body and how it reacts as well as multiple tweaks to both how you eat and how you are working out.

Building muscle and burning fat, the holy grail of 21st century fitness takes a concentrated effort that is adaptable. Whether it requires you to eat less calories or lift more weights, the key to improving your physique is reflection. So write everything down, observe the results and then change them accordingly. I promise you’ll get to your goal quicker!

How in the world does Ryan Reynolds get his abs to look like that? That is almost exactly how I wanna look.

My nutrition is really good, I eat lots of fruits and veggies, nuts too, especially almonds. I eat sandwiches a lot, especially pb&j, but I’m trying to go more primal.

Work out 4 times a week, I do “strength training” the way Rusty says too, not bodybuilder workouts. Except I do deadlifts and squats which Rusty doesn’t.

I don’t do a lot of cardio, I run maybe 1/4 of a mile twice a week. I play basketball pretty intensely once or twice a week. Plus I’m a college student so I walk all over campus, probably walk a total of 5 miles a day.

I do ab workouts after my strength training most days. I do regular planks and both sides for 30 seconds each. Reverse crunches, usually 20. And various other ab exercises. Usually only do 2-3 ab exercises per session.

I’m 21, 5′11″, 140lbs., Approximately 6-8% body fat. I am close to having an 8 pack and my abs are visible all the time, not as great when not flexing. Yet I look nothing like Ryan Reynolds does in that photo.

@ SoG: Yes, he is awesome beyond words. He’s the guy to beat these days.

@ Dangeruss: Well, if you are in the 6-8% range (which is fantastic in and of itself by the way) and you don’t have that look, then maybe you have to switch up your routine. Start doing sprints, forget the running.

Also, what are the differences between the Reynolds look and what you’ve got now?

Gotta agree with you on the sprints Andrew. Whilst I’m nowhere near Ryan Reynolds’ abs I’ve noticed that ever since I started doing intense interval sprints once or twice a week my stomach has got a lot flatter.

Despite this I still enjoy my longer distance running (even if it’s not the best way to get the Hollywood physique) and try and get a long run in once a week. I find it’s a really great way to clear your mind and have some quiet time plus the actual sensation of distance running has a really calming effect on me.

@ Tusc: Well I mind! Hahaha, I want a 10-Pack like Ryan Reynolds… I’m working on it though.

@ Tom: I hear you. I get the same thing from walking to and from the gym. Everyone needs an activity to help them clear their head from time to time.

Great post! around the web there are alot of good articles on “the Hollywood look”, i agree with the mentioning of Rusty as the Fitness Blackbook aims solidly for this look. To me another big thing is definately knowing that it takes ALOT of work, and ALOT of time to get in this good of shape… Many people i know who got into fitness just quit, it was just a phase. Because in the world of quick fixes people assume they should get fast results, and when the going gets tough or they hit the first plateau…. sometimes its hard to stick to it! People just need to know their goals and be driven by them, the “make changes” point was a very good one, funny thing about fitness is if you workout at a public gym, just from having an open mind you could probably learn something from almost any ones ruitine! People say knowledge is power… and most people strive for power, so i look at knowledge as a MUST when it comes to fitness… without proper knowledge people could easily over train, or work hard at the gym only to set their progress down with a horrible, horrible diet!

You’re right, it does take quite a bit of time to get real, lasting results. But time isn’t everything. Understanding that balance and using the proper knowledge to do the right amount of exercise and eat the proper caloric intake is essential. It takes hard work, but it’s worth it!

      All the Best,

      Andrew

Without some high intensity cardio built into your workouts, I think anyone is fighting a losing battle trying to get “that Hollywood look.” Keep up the great work!

Hey Cynthia, thanks for the props on the article. I just had a chance to check out your site… very cool stuff. Striving for a mantra of truth in health and fitness can definitely seem self-defeating since everyone is looking for the easiest answer, but I agree with you that it takes time to see results. Ryan Reynolds = results!
