Battling obesity the healthy way - Part 2
Posted on Nov 07, 2008 by Andrew in General Health & Fitness, Weight Loss .
In the first part of Battling Obesity The Healthy Way, we took a look at the prevalence of obesity in America as well as the health risks that occur as a result of it. Now let’s take a look at the benefits of fighting obesity as well as the healthy way to do so!
While many peoples’ goal for battling obesity may be aesthetic, there are great health benefits that will come from lowering the occurrence of obesity, as illustrated by The American Dietetic Association:
“Addressing obesity will reduce the risk for many chronic diseases and substantially reduce the millions of dollars now spent on treating diabetes, hypertension, coronary …………………………………………………heart disease and knee osteoarthritis.”
All of these chronic diseases pose serious health threats to Americans who are obese. I will try to touch on these in future posts, along with providing some views on how to reduce the risks of these serious diseases.
In a separate position paper written by the American Dietetic Association (citation below) on the topic of weight management, they stated that:
“For most people who are overweight or obese, treatment recommendations are based on decreasing caloric intake, increasing physical activity, and making permanent, healthy lifestyle changes.”
These concepts of decreasing caloric intake, increasing physical activity and making permanent, healthy lifestyle changes are the backbone for a healthy way to battle obesity in a person’s life. Notice that it doesn’t mention dieting as a healthy way to fight obesity. That’s because while diets may lead a person to a healthier lifestyle, a diet in and of itself is not the answer or solution to obesity.
If you’re curious to learn more on obesity and how to combat it, here are some interesting articles:
Mark’s Daily Apple analyzed a study on how exercising can lower the occurrence of obesity.
Zen to Fitness wrote a very important article on the dangers of using stimulants and fat burners as a means to losing weight.
Mizfit wrote a very eye opening article on childhood obesity.
