Checking Out Celebrity Workouts - Hugh Jackman

Posted on Dec 02, 2008 by Andrew in Celebrity Diets & Workouts .

Recently crowned as People Magazine’s “Sexiest Man Alive” in 2008, Hugh Jackman (40) joins the ranks of names like Brad Pitt, Richard Gere, Tom Cruise, George Clooney, Denzel Washington and the first winner in 1985, Mel Gibson. These days, if you want to be the sexiest man alive, you better be in top shape. And Jackman is just that! Amping up for his most recent role in the action/adventure pic AUSTRALIA, Hugh Jackman gets in great shape with a combination of a sound diet and workout plan! Let’s see how he did it!

Workout

If you’re looking for that leading Hollywood man physique, you’re inevitably going to be lifting heavy weights. That’s exactly what Hugh Jackman did while preparing for his most physical role in X-Men (Men’s Health):

“He benched 315 pounds and leg-pressed 1,000 prepping for X-Men: The Last Stand.”

But, as we’ve discussed before, it’s not all about the weight. Your form while lifting weights must be the focus of any type of lifting. That’s exactly what Steve Ramsbottom, Jackman’s personal trainer, had Hugh focus on while lifting weights (How Celebrity’s Lose Weight):

“First phase was focused on building mass by changing the speed of each lift, 3 sec count up and then a 1 sec count down or really slow 4 sec count up and 4 count down.”

Controlling the speed of your lifting is almost as important as the form that you maintain. When you see guys at the gym lifting at lightning fast speeds, it’s because they aren’t strong enough to lift that weight at a slower pace. If I had to place the three aspects of weight lifting in descending order, it would be Form –> Control –> Weight. Here’s an example of what his “Wolverine Workout” looked like (for complete explanation on how to do these exercises, please refer to How Celebrities Lose Weight):

Day 1

  • Dumbbell Chest Press (Swiss ball and dumbbells required)
  • Push-ups
  • Lat Pull Downs (modular lat pulldown machine required)
  • External Shoulder Rotations (tubing required)
  • Cable Side Raise (adjustable cable pulley machine required)
  • Straight Bar Curl (free-standing bar required)
  • Close Grip Bar Push-up (free-standing bar and squat rack required)

Day 2

  • Leg Squat
  • Balance Board Lunge (extreme or round board is required)
  • Split Leg Box Jump (do immediately after balance lunge)
  • Jack Knife
  • Swiss Ball Crunch (do immediately after jack knife)

Day 3

  • Walking Lunges: Hold dumbbells at sides. Step through front heel and bring back knee towards floor. Do 30 steps.
  • Push-ups: Do 100.
  • Swiss Ball Crunch: Do 50.
  • Sprint: Outside or on treadmill, sprint 1 minute at 80 percent intensity.
  • Inch Worms : In a push-up position, take tiny steps so the feet come towards the hands. Keep walking until you feel a gentle stretch through the hamstrings. Do this 30 times.
  • Lat Pull Downs : Do 50.
  • Stairs: Take every second step. Perform 20 reps (up and down is 1).”

This is a very intense workout routine!! I would only recommend this to someone that possessed the utmost experience and physical fitness as it is meant for an athlete. Tomorrow we’ll take a look at Hugh Jackman’s diet in Checking Out Celebrity Diets & Workouts!

Hugh Jackman is not a lawyer and never has been. He holds a BA degree in Communications, emphasis on journalism, along with his degree from WAAPA in Perth.

Miz: Hey Miz, thanks for the comment! His workout ability is definitely an enigma to me, the guy is driven!

SoG: You think he looks too bulky there? I don’t know man, he looks diesel and I don’t think his body fat percentage is very high there either. Either way

Marc: I actually didn’t know that he used to be a lawyer! You learn something new everyday!

Thanks for the comments guys and gals!

I do think that. Compare the 2 pictures you posted. X-men pic, he looks smooth and huge (not saying he is fat at all) like he is retaining water or something. In the second pic, he is still buff, but slimmer and more GQ. I think it is a much better look for him.

Not really impressed by Hugh, he does have some good lean muscle mass but nothing that impressive. He has a good cut going on but it could be better. im 18 and i can put up 285 so 315 isn’t that impressive.

Nice, 285 is pretty solid. I think that the really impressive thing is to be able to balance fitness with other priorities, in Jackman’s case his acting.

      Hey Joe,

If you’re trying to bulk up, you have to obviously eat more calories. So if you decide to go the 6 meal a day route, then those 6 meals will depend on how many total calories you need to be eating. In order to figure that out, you must figure out what your daily caloric intake is, and then simply add calories to it. The trick is you need to figure out how many calories you will need to add, and that is different for everyone. There is no universal calorie number that will bulk you up like Jackman.

If you need help figuring out your daily caloric intake, check out this post:
