Eating Healthy Like Cam Gigandet
Posted on Dec 31, 2008 by Andrew in Celebrity Diets & Workouts .
Yesterday we checked out the workout lifestyle of Cam Gigandet. While a specific meal plan for Gigandet isn’t available from a reliable source, I’m going to provide a few ways to tweak your meal plan so that it will provide you the best opportunity to attain a physique like Cam.
Eating Less Is Essential For Attaining A Super Lean Physique
America as a whole eats too many calories. Period, scoreboard, end of story, etc.
Therefore, knowing your daily caloric intake is the most important part of reaching this type of physique. Here’s a sentence from a must read article that you should make your mantra when looking to gain a physique like Cam Gigandet (IF Life):
“A basic workout with dialed in nutrition will give phenomenal results.”
But it’s got to be dialed in, meaning precise. While you can make the argument that the effortlessly skinny folks have this ingrained in their instinct like a compass knows where North is, most of us need to be a little more precise about the endeavor of losing weight. Don’t be afraid of understanding how many calories are in certain foods.
I’ve probably mentioned it in the past, but when I went on Weight Watchers back in the day, one of the best parts about the system was the whole idea about “points”. Basically, if you need to think of calories as anything other than calories, go for it. But knowing the “price” of food is essential to getting more lean. All the exercise in the world won’t make up for a lackluster approach to your diet.
Eating Healthier Is Essential For Maintaining Lean Muscle

Notice how I put this section after the eating less section. Here’s why (Fitness Black Book):
“…the politically correct answer to give when someone asks about losing weight is by ‘eating healthy’…but ‘eating less’ is the scientifically correct answer. You can eat a lot of healthy foods, but if you eat more than you burn…you are NOT going to lose weight.”
With that said, I need to make it clear that just because you eat less doesn’t mean that you will get that Cam Gigandet look. I know from experience. The first time I lost weight, my diet was significantly lacking in nutrients, vitamins and minerals. Hence, when I lost weight, my physique was more “skinny” as opposed to “cut”.
How did I fix it? I incorporated a few foods as staples in my diet:
- Spinach
- Broccoli
- Berries
- Almonds
- Eggs
- Meat
Once I did that, I saw a big difference in how I was slimming down… by retaining a muscular physique while losing weight. Not to mention that I kept a lot of my strength in the process.
Removing Grain Based Carbs Will Make The Process Easier
If you’re looking for results, I would recommend that you ditch the carbs. I’m not even touching the health issue here, I’m talking about ways to lose body fat to gain a super lean, muscular physique. I’ve tried both ways, and this is the one that worked for me (I’m down to 9.5% body fat without carbs). While eating grain based carbs, I was never able to get lower than 11.5% body fat.
Attaining this type of physique requires attentiveness, tweaking and being flexible. My advice would be to take notes on how your body reacts to different foods. Also, if you want a good workout split to go along with this type of diet, check out Rusty’s post.

Just a quick question Andrew? How do you measure your body fat %? Do you need a special device?

Hey Tom,
Great question. You can do it with a device, calipers or by taking body measurements. Here’s the link to an article I did on the subject:

Thanks for the question!

How many carbs should I cut to have a lean body like cam?
andrew

Hey Marvin,
That really depends. It depend on how tall you are, how old you are, how much you currently weigh. Also, if you stay between the 1-50 grams of carbs a day, only getting it from fruit and vegetables, you’ll probably have an easier time leaning out like that.
Thanks for the question!

Hey Andrew
I need some tips for you in order to help get the cam look.
First and foremost, what % body fat should I aim for?
What should weight should I aim for? I’m currently 6ft and 11 stone.
How often should I exercise and what exercises would you recommend?
What food should I be eating and what not?
Like, pasta, fish, and so on.
Sorry for all the questions
Hope you can help

Hey Grant,
I love the questions, no need to apologize. There is definitely a lot that goes into getting that type of look. Staying away from the carbs like breads, pasta and grains will definitely help you get the body fat percentage lower. Focus you diet on green, leafy vegetables, meat, fish, nuts, fruit, all whole foods basically. But the key is your caloric intake. You simply need to lower your total calories to lose weight. Cam is probably around 6% body fat when fully cut. I’ll try and address this more thoroughly in a post dedicated to this question.
Thanks for the question!

Andrew

Wow thanks for the nice and fast response!
Ok, 6% is the aim then, I’m looking to get a machine test my current body fat percentage, and then I can monitor my progress! How often you would say I should have the percentage checked?
I’m not really into vegetables and fruits, well we barely ever have any in the house, is there anything I can take to supplement this?
Also regarding the calorie intake, should I be aiming to eat the least possible whilst still satisfying my hunger?

Grant

Hey Grant,
In terms of checking your body fat percentage, I wouldn’t do it more than once a week. Here’s a link on body fat percentage machines that I did a while back:
http://gohealthygofit.com/how-accurate-are-body-fat-testing-machines/
As far as fruits and vegetables go, there are tons of supplements that you can take. But nothing can substitute for the real thing. Just because they aren’t in the house doesn’t mean you can’t go out and buy them! I would highly recommend that you begin incorporating more vegetables if you want to get that type of look.
And when it comes to caloric intake, it’s not about starving yourself. It’s about figuring out how many calories you must eat in order to start losing weight (burning fat). That takes first understanding how much you eat now, second the amount you should be eating. It could be 200 calories less a day it could be more. You have to feel it out. Also, don’t forget to check with your doctor before you do anything drastic with regards to your health (that’s my disclaimer).
All the Best,
Andrew

Ok Thanks Again!
I’ll get out, grab some fruit and maybe some supplements if the fruit runs out!
Hopefully I’ll measure by % tomorrow and I’ll get back to you, I’ll measure it every 2 weeks to monitor my progress!
I’ve found a few routines which hopefully I’ll stick to and I’ll keep you updated!
Many Thanks

I think you can work out up to 6 times a week, just make sure you’re giving yourself enough rest in terms of lifting weights. You can throw in some lower body plyometrics, sprints, etc. You can work your abs more often as well.

Hey Grant,
My suggestion (because I do it myself) would be to ditch the bread. The fillings, like chicken, turkey, roast beef, etc. are the good stuff. Also, concentrate on making your vegetables the focal point. They don’t have to be the bulk of your meal, but they should be the most important part.

Andrew

Hey Patrick,
I would recommend one of two things. Try sticking to a protein shake, very basic, one scoop in water or maybe even almond milk. Have your meals after your workout, it should help. Or, if you feel up to it and your health permits (with the approval of your doctor), you could try looking into intermittent fasting. Please be very careful when trying this approach. When used properly, you can burn fat very effectively. Here’s a link about IF:

one more question, i work out twice a week with a trainer which involves full body workouts, what should i do on the off days? i already do some sprints, and go to the YMCA and play basketball, what other suggestions would you have?
Andrew

Try and get some more lifting in. You could even have an ab day (no need for heavy weights when working your abs). It all depends on the workouts that your trainer has you doing.

i have one more, what would you suggest to eat? i usualy don’t eat that much….like on day i will just eat a salad with grilled chicken and some fruit and maybe a yogurt and that’s all i would eat that day. what suggestions would you have to eat? should i cut anything out? add anything in?
once again thank you for answering my question

I would add in more vegetables first and foremost. And not just one particular vegetables, but multiple, different colored vegetables. You will see more bang for your buck in terms of gains as well as overall health from this addition than any other suggestion you could take. Also, be careful about eating too little. While it is possible to go a little while on few calories, the truth is that there is a sweet spot and sometimes it may be more than you would think. Play around with it, write down what works and what doesn’t so you can figure out the exact amount of calories that works for you. It’s all about trial and error and record keeping.

Andrew

Good question Patrick. It all depends on how you want to eat them. If you can eat ‘em raw, go for it. Just don’t cook them with unhealthy stuff like bad cheese or something. I actually buy some vegetables that come frozen in the steam bags that you put in the microwave for when I’m lazy!

Hey Patrick,
There’s really an infinite amount of ways you can eat good whole foods, but remember that the calorie count is what is most important seeing as Cam’s size is smaller in terms of his weight. So, with the vegetables, make sure to get in some good fruits, nuts, meats, eggs, avocados, fish, chicken, etc. Stick to whole foods, concentrate on the calories and you should be good to go. And remember, make sure you make adjustments when you aren’t seeing results.

I would stick with chicken and turkey, and of course red meat. The key thing to remember here is that you will no doubt be eating less than most do, so a huge steak won’t really in the cards if you’re also eating vegetables, fruits, and good fats.

Good to see someone who is committed at giving accurate answers.
I am exactly 6 feet tall and am 16 years old, weighing around 145.
While i’m naturally very skinny, I can tell I have some fat around the edges. I workout 4 days per week and am eating healthy as well.
Any help on how to gain some muscle weight and lose the fat weight?

Hey Patrick,
This seems to me to be the most common problem from men looking for a leaner physique. I know from personal experience that sculpting your lower mid-section is very difficult, especially when one has an affinity for cookies in the way that I myself do. When it comes down to it, it’s really all about the fat laying over your lower abs, which in men is typically the last fat on the body to be burned off (which sucks cause it seems like it’s the most crucial area for attaining that six pack).
I would simply recommend everything that I’ve been recommending all along, but if you really want to see that six pack you just have to be extremely precise about your calculations. Find out exactly how many calories you should be eating, cut out all of the sugar and junk food. It takes work, and most of all time. Even if you feel as though you are putting out the effort consistently, you may still need to make adjustments to see results.
Hope that helps!
