Great Music For Your Workout - Blogger Edition Part 2
Posted on Nov 28, 2008 by Andrew in Workout Music .
Given the popularity of last weeks blogger edition of Great Music For Your Workout, I’ve decided that we should take a look at the music playlist of some more awesome health and fitness bloggers from around the web!! We’ve got the superstars of today and the allstars of tomorrow!! Whether they’ve been blogging for years or they’re just getting started, we’ve got their top 5 music choices to workout to! Let’s see what’s on their iPod’s, starting in alphabetical order (by website name).
Cranky Fitness
Quick bio from Jamie Graham’s (aka “Crabby McSlacker”) website: “Cranky Fitness is a health blog written by Crabby McSlacker and Merry Sunshine… Would you like upbeat inspirational advice about how easy and fun
it is to eat healthy food, lose weight, and stay in shape? Then you will probably not like it here! One of the founding principles of Cranky Fitness is: Healthy Living is a Pain in the @&%.”
And this is what Jamie “Crabby McSlacker” had to say about music, “It’s probably obvious from the title of my blog that I’m not a super-motivated exerciser. I do it ’cause it’s good for me, and I NEED good music to make it enjoyable. I’ve been close to tears on discovering I’d forgotten my iPod and had to workout without tunes.
I could never pick a “top” five, but here’s a sample of the sort of songs that get me going:
1. Ricky Martin “She Bangs” (Spanish version)
2. Chely Wright “C’est La Vie” - youtube video N/A
3. Tom Petty “I Need to Know”
4. Scissor Sisters “Music is the Victim”
5. Gabin “The Other Way Round”
Note: Jamie, did Ricky Martin even do an English version of “She Bangs”?!? J/K, but we’ll definitely stick with the Spanish version!!
Free Fitness Tips
Quick bio from Tom Parker’s website: “I started the Free Fitness Tips Blog to go hand-in-hand with the Free Fitness Tips Email Course. This blog contains; fitness tips, diet tips, exercise tips, weight loss tips, motivational tips and more. I try to cover a number of topics related to all aspects of health & fitness. I
update the blog fairly regularly (every couple of days) so keep checking back for new information.
1) Everclear - I Will Buy You a New Life
2) Angels & Airwaves- Secret Crowds
3) Blink 182 - Always
4) Bowling for Soup - Luckiest Loser
5) Hot Action Cop - Fever for the Flava
“I used to work out to whatever music my gym was playing at the time but ever since I got my Ipod I haven’t gone to the gym without it. I don’t know how I survived before (especially when you consider some of the stuff my gym plays). I think music is really important when working out - especially on weekdays when after a long day at work motivation can be running low. I prefer to workout to upbeat pop-rock songs because I find that when I am tired and demotivated, this type of music can be really uplifting and give me the motivation to do my workout. Plus, it reminds me of teen comedies such as American Pie which always brings a smile to my face.”
Modern Forager
Quick bio from Scott Kustes’ website: When you visit Modern Forager, according to Scott, “…you’ll find my musings about health news, articles and studies, recipes and cooking tips, and posts on my other passions, particularly nature, animals, and evolution. I hope you enjoy reading this site as much as I enjoy writing it. I
hope that we all learn something new today and that I am able to pass along some information that is helpful to you in your journey to supreme health.”
1. Static X - Push It
2. Slipknot - Psychosocial
3. N.W.A - Straight Outta Compton
4. Rammstein - Du Hast
5. Helmet - Unsung
“I guess it’s pretty easy to see what I’m going for with my musical selections. Hard driving beats, aggressive lyrics, songs that you can really feel…the kind of song you’d listen to before getting in a boxing ring. My workout mix is mainly rock, with a bit of rap like N.W.A or Public Enemy and a few techno songs. But I only use music when I’m in the gym, not when I go to the track or for a bike ride or a hike. Mainly, music is a way of drowning out the adult contemporary or Top 40 that most gyms play (seriously, one day I forgot my iPod and had to try to do heavy squats with “Do You Really Want To Hurt Me?” by Culture Club playing…bad juju). When I’m outside, I can just enjoy the sounds, which may include me heaving for wind. But there’s something about a bass drum pounding in my ears that puts me in a zone for going hard and heavy.”
Son Of Grok
Quick bio from Erick Lebrun’s website: “This is my Blog about my life living by the Primal Blueprint. For more info on the Primal Blueprint, please visit Mark Sisson’s site at www.marksdailyapple.com. So what do I hope to accomplish with this blog? Main hope: To help spread a message of health in our mis-informed and growingly obese society.”
“If it weren’t for music, I probably wouldn’t work out half as hard as I do. For music selection, I usually just
pop my entire library on random and get down to business (I workout at home so I have access to my full library). I listen to classical music, alternative rock, classic rock, modern rock, techno, trance, dance, old school hip hop you name it. My preference most of the time tends to lean towards trance and dance. The problem is that my music library consists of over 10,000 songs and its hard to single out just 5 songs so what I will do is go to the last 5 songs that played during my last workout!
Music is such an important part of my life. Music motivates me, it inspires me, it calms me down, it is so much! I listen to music every chance I get. I listen while I workout, while I take my walks, at work while I am at my desk doing computer work, while I eat dinner and I am even listening to music right now.
On another related note, schools really are losing their music programs. Save the music!”
That’s what we’re trying to do here Erick!! I completely agree with him on this point. We can’t let music education die in our schools, so if you’re a member of your local PTA, make sure to let them know how important music is to our kid’s education! And let the tunes keep on rocking!!
I’d like to say thank you to Jamie, Tom, Scott and Erick for providing Go Healthy Go Fit with their music playlists! This is just as fun for me as it is for the readers!!
If you’d like to see another Blogger Edition of Great Music For Your Workout, please leave a comment letting me know which blogger and I’ll go get their playlist for you!

Fun times Andrew! Where in the world was that picture?
SoG, yeah, I like it pretty hardcore when I’m in the gym. Outside of the gym, I’m more into old school rap, classic rock, etc. But in the gym, it’s pretty strictly stuff I don’t listen to outside of the gym.
Cheers

Hey Scott,
The picture you had on your website was a little hard to see, so I just ripped a picture off of your facebook account and threw it in there. I figure it would be easier and more appropriate than bugging you over Thanksgiving. What can I say, I’m pretty resourceful!!
Thanks again for participating with this, it’s always a lot of fun!
All the Best,
Andrew

Oh my goodness, I’d never seen the “Music is the Victim” video before, and it’s grosssss! Sorry to anyone who inadvertently watched it.
But aside from discovering how literally a video producer can take the lyrics “I left my heart in San Francisco,” this was a fun, thanks Andrew! And I’m looking forward to checking out the other blogger’s cool tunes.

I too would like to thankyou for including me Andrew. You got me thinking about something that is a huge part of my workout (music) but I generally pay very little attention to. I think I will have to start creating a few specific fitness playlists. At the moment I just hit shuffle and keep skipping till a song I like appears. Sometimes I’m just sitting there going click, click, click…

Hey Tom,
Thanks for being a part of it! I always think about new songs that would get me pumped up at the gym. If they won’t help during my workout, or cooldown for that matter, they probably won’t go on the mp3 player.
All the Best,
Andrew
