Great Music For Your Workout - Blogger Edition Part 3
Posted on Dec 12, 2008 by Andrew in Workout Music .
I’m stoked for the opportunity to bring you another edition of Great Music For Your Workout - Blogger Edition! This is one of the best posts to both read and write. As Part 1 and Part 2 have shown us, bloggers have eclectic tastes when it comes to getting into the fitness groove, just like the rest of us! It’s funny to think that one song can focus, inspire and propel a person to perform great feats of strength, while that same song won’t mean anything to someone else. I’m a big fan of all of these bloggers, so lets see which songs mean what to whom (huh?).
Conditioning Research
Quick bio from Chris Highcock’s website: “Conditioning Research is really a place where I put interesting things that I find about health and fitness. There is something of a ‘confirmation bias’ I suppose in that I tend to post things that support by preferred approach. My preferred approach is I suppose something akin
to Mark Sisson’s Primal Fitness or DeVany’s Evolutionary fitness. A lowish carb diet, lots of protein, lots of fat. Infrequent but intense workouts - intervals, compound movements, sprints, lots of easy walking. Lots of sleep, mobility work, decent posture, minimal stress.”
“I am a bit schizophrenic when it comes to music. This is the sort of stuff that I’d listen to in a workout. It excites and motivates. Music can really generate aggression and emotion that can be useful in a workout. The Manowar is sort of heroic too and conjures visions of Tolkienesque warriors ranging over windswept battlefields. So it is old school metal mainly from the 1980’s when I was a spotty teenager! There is a “swagger” about much of this music that makes me stand taller and feel more confident….After training and indeed at most other times my tastes are a little more mellow. I’m most likely to be found listening to Lambchop (Is a woman?), Bonnie Prince Billy, Leonard Cohen, Van Morrison or Smog.”
Double Your Gains
Quick bio from Caleb Lee’s website: “Here you’ll find tons of info on How to Build Muscle Fast and other muscle building secrets that I know (and new ones that I discover each and every day!)”
“I don’t usually workout to music but when I do I like these:
3. Jay-Z - Public Service Announcement
4. Rage Against The Machine - Wake Up
5. The Game - Roc Boys In The Building
Music is a great way to get pumped up when you’re finding it hard to get motivated at the gym. The beat can get you psyched up all by itself, get your head moving and your blood pumping.
What I like even better are songs where the lyrics get you jacked too — lyrics talking about overcoming obstacles (like ones in rap songs) I like a lot because they get me focused on being the best I can be.
So if I had to give the main emotions music can give me when I’m working out I’d say it’s focused and motivated.”
Nikki’s Blogspot
Quick bio about Nikki Young’s site: She’s the founder of www.feedthefitness.com and the author of The Paleo Cookbook. Her blog deals with the practicality of health, fitness and of course, the Paleo way of life (with a few great
free recipes to boot!). When it comes to “toning” for women, she’s got her pulse on the right information… after all, when a women provides a post on how to perform the perfect squat, I know we’re all impressed!
2. MGMT - Kids
3. Royksopp - Only this moment
5. Matchbox Twenty - How far we’ve come
“I generally don’t listen to music when lifting weights but I will always listen to music when doing cardio; I find it helps me push myself harder when doing sprints and keeps my energy levels up when doing endurance. Listening to music when running provides a distraction and gives entertainment to the same scenery which I have going down the same paths or running on the treadmill; if I don’t listen to music I would most likely just get bored and that’s never a good thing when exercising.
I’m a huge fan of music, I listen to music almost all day when driving, working on the computer and before going to sleep. I usually always listen to house and trance music but when working out I prefer listening to up-beat ‘happy’ songs with a good melody and tempo.”
That’s Fit
Fitz is a writer for the wesbsite That’s Fit. She also has her own website called Fitzness.com, you should check it out. Here’s a quick bio from Fitz’s website: “Eighteen years of experience teaching fitness all over the world,
combined with hosting fitness television shows, training instructors, guest speaking for endless organizations… Fitz has left in her wake millions of healthier children and adults to live better and longer lives. With a Master’s Degree in Exercise and Sport Sciences, and Sports Administration from the University of Florida, certifications through AFAA and NAFC, Fitz has combined a level of education and experience rarely surpassed.”
3. Wonderful Night - Fatboy Slim
4. Beautiful People - Marilyn Manson
“I have always been motivated by music. My body thrives off of fast aggressive training (which is probably why I loved competitively kickboxing), so I often rely on fast aggressive music to pump me up. I love it LOUD too. The louder, the better.”
So that does it for another great edition of Great Music For Your Workout - Blogger Edition! Big thanks to Chris, Caleb, Nikki and Fitz for all being great sports and helping put this article together!

Hey Tom,
My pleasure! It’s really interesting to see others playlists. Every time I do this post, I see a song that I used to work out to and I make sure to throw it back in my iPod!
Thanks for the comment!
All the Best,
Andrew
