Great Music For Your Workout - Blogger Edition
Posted on Nov 21, 2008 by Andrew in Workout Music .
This has been the most fun article I’ve written to date! When I started doing the weekly post Great Music For Your Workout, it got me to thinking; I wonder what other health and fitness bloggers listen to while they workout? So I figured, why not do an entire post dedicated to health and fitness bloggers MP3 selections!! Let’s see what music made their top 5 music choices, starting in alphabetical order (by website name).
Fat Man Unleashed
Quick bio from Israel Lagares’ website: Israel Lagares, “…used to be the kind of guy that was always in shape: a gym rat. But over the last few years I have fallen off tremendously. This is my final attempt to get back into shape and get to where I once was.”
1. Like Toy Soldiers - Eminem
2. Mosh - Eminem
3. Jesus Walks - Kanye West
4. Fly Away - Lenny Kravitz
5. Rollin’ - Limp Bizkit
“I could easily have listed all Eminem songs, or DMX songs for that matter. There are just so many songs that could fuel my workouts. It really depends on the mood I am in. Normally, any kind of hip hop, rap, or rock beats can get me going, especially during runs. I’ve found as long as I have some kind of continuous sound in my ear phones when running, that it adds an extra 15 to 20 minutes to my workout. Back in college I would time my runs by the amount of songs that played and not by the minutes. I don’t normally play music when I lift, but for cardio…it’s a must!”
Israel - Fat Man Unleashed
The Fitness Black Book
Quick bio from Rusty Moore’s website: Rusty Moore describes his site as, “A site where I could lay out a training approach to help guys and girls get the lean, ‘Hollywood Look’.”
1. Push - Universal Nation
2. One More Time - Daft Punk
3. Josh Wink - Higher State of Consciousness
4. Tori Amos - Professional Widow (Armand Van Helden Remix)
5. Chicane - Offshore
“I like techno and progressive house music to workout to. I guess it reminds me of the wild Rave scene back in the early 90’s with 5,000+ people crammed into a warehouse with 15 foot speakers kicking out crazy bass (I did a tiny bit of DJ’ing back in the day). It used to keep me up until 6AM, now it just energizes me for my workout. Too many to list…here are 5 classics.”
Rusty - The Fitness Black Book
Go Healthy Go Fit
Quick bio from… me: “My goal is to share with you the knowledge and tricks I utilized, through researching and speaking with fitness pros, in order to attaining whatever goal I put my mind too… and you can too!”
1. When You Touch Me - Free Masons ..I swear I was an aerobics instructor in my past life!
2. You Know My Name - Chris Cornell
3. Dig - Incubus
4. Ironman - Black Sabath
5. Love Is Gone - Chris Willis & David Guetta
“Wow… I listen to these songs all the time and never think anything of it, but when I wrote them all down it really makes me look whacky!! Hahhaa, but I love music and couldn’t work out without it. Especially songs that make me feel like a badass (i.e. “You Know My Name” from CASINO ROYALE makes me feel like James Bond and “Ironman” makes me feel like a superhero)!”
Andrew - Go Healthy Go Fit
Grounded Fitness
Quick bio from Kelly Turner’s website: “Grounded Fitness’s philosphy is, Get Grounded, Stay Grounded. Fitness and a healthy lifestyle doesn’t have to be as hard as everyone makes you believe. There are no tricks, or hints or gimmicks or secrets” according to Kelly Turner, author of Grounded Fitness.
1. Nate Dogg and Warren : Regulators
2. Daft Punk: Harder, Better, Faster, Stronger (you know, the good one, before Kanye ruined it)
3. Atreyu: Right Side of the Bed
4. N.E.R.D: Rock Star
5. Notorious BIG: Gimme the Loot
“You all probably think I’m insane now, but I like a big mix of stuff. These songs I usually play the most because they 1) have a good beat 2) I can sing along (in my head) and keep myself distracted or 3) have memories attached so they make me happy when I hear them.”
Kelly - Grounded Fitness
Note for Kelly: You know I only put up the OG Daft Punk!! - Andrew R
Mark’s Daily Apple
Quick bio from Mark Sisson’s website: Here’s Mark Sisson’s mission statement:
“I intend to use this space to empower people to take full responsibility for their own health and enjoyment of life by investigating, discussing, and critically rethinking everything we’ve assumed to be true about health and wellness.
Mark - Mark’s Daily Apple
MizFit Online
Quick bio from Carla Birnberg’s website: “Armed with her recognized writing gift and a passion for fit living, MizFit shifted gears to become a noted health/fitness columnist and trusted source for helping others outline realistic and achievable goals.”
If you’re one of those people that doesn’t like to workout with headphones on, you’re not alone! That’s exactly how Carla from MizFit does it, and in true MizFit form might I add! Let’s see what she had to say about it!
“Even though I wrote this magazine article touting the importance of music whilst working out Im lifelong music-free when it comes to toting an mp3 play along for my workouts.
I could give you various & sundry reasons (you know, pretend that it’s all about being focused and zen for MizFit) but the bottom line is that I get paralyzed when it comes to creating a playlist.
I know that I dont like the musical backdrop offered at my workout facility (it rhymes with MOLDS) but the pain I know is better than the paininthearse of trying to locate & assemble a grouping of songs that *will* motivate me.
And have the right beats etc.
itunes? ye overwhelm me.
(though Ive heard that this site is coming soon and will be ALL PLAYLISTS. Im in. and they are Austin people. Gotta support my peeps.)”
Carla - Mizfit Online
Well, there you have it! I hope you’ve enjoyed this weeks Great Music For Your Workout because I know that I have!! I’d like to say thank you again to Israel, Rusty, Kelly, Mark (and his editor Aaron Fox of course!) and Carla for being such good sports in helping me make this article. This was truly a treat for me and I know it will be for my readers as well!
If you’d like to see another Blogger Edition of Great Music For Your Workout, please leave a comment letting me know which blogger and I’ll go get their playlist for you!

Don’t worry, I figured it out and made a little field trip over to Back in Skinny Jeans. Somehow I don’t think I’m gonna fit into the Joe’s jeans giveaway though!! But maybe after I do some grocery isle lunges… Oh, and I made sure to let Stephanie know that the first lady of health and fitness (and rhyming for that matter!) sent me!!
Thanks for the comment!

Thanks for that post Andrew. Very enjoyable :o) Personally, I can’t do anything physical without music!! (no, that’s a lie, I do yoga in silence). I don’t really have a top 5, I’m happy with whatever shuffle is thrown at me, but I definitely get more motiviated when an upbeat track comes on :o)
I just can’t imagine life without music :o)

Andrew,
Nice post buddy, I like how you made it easy for people to click and listen to each of these songs. I especially like Mark Sisson listing of “She Wants Revenge”. Amazing band…I’ve seen them twice at two small shows.
I also forgot about Warren G (on Kelly Turner’s list). I’m not a huge fan of new hip-hop stuff, but can listen to old school classics all day long.
Andrew…you are delivering too many exceptional posts…you are making the rest of us look bad!
