Intermittent Fasting

Posted on Nov 22, 2008 by Andrew in General Health & Fitness, Weight Loss .

Intermittent Fasting (IF) is an outlook on healthy eating that has gained popularity in the past few years. As far as eating goes, IF is the polar opposite to the idea of eating 5-7 meals a day, a fairly popular method of dieting. So if it’s the opposite, how could IF possibly work? Let’s first take a look at the definition of Intermittent Fasting provided by Scott over at The Modern Forager:

“First things first, let’s define fasting. A simple timeline showing the various states of the body will be useful here (baseline is the end of the previous meal):
- Up to about 3 hours: the ‘fed’ state
- From 3 to about 12-18 hours: the ‘postabsorptive’ or ‘early fasting’ state
- Up to about 2 days: the ‘fasting’ state
- Beyond 2 days: ’starvation’ state or ‘long-term fasting’

Gandhi fasted too!

We all know that eating 5 to 7 meals a day can help you lose weight. But the reason why this is has been inherently lost on folks, save a few notable bloggers. One such blogger, Mike O’Donnell of The IF Life, has just recently posted an eye opening two part (Part 1 and Part 2) series discussing why eating 6 meals a day does NOT in fact boost your metabolism:

“This is one of the biggest myths and misconceptions that I hear all the time in mainstream media and people trying to tell me how to eat healthy…

Hey, I will be the first to admit it that eating 6x a day can work. Many people have proved it. But what people neglect to look at is WHY it works. It’s NOT because of some magical accelerated metabolic process associated with eating more often. Most people call this thermogenesis, where the body expels energy in the form of heat through what it has to do (such as the energy of digestion). But here’s the fun part, if you eat the same amount of food in 6 meals or 3 meals isn’t that the same amount of digestion?”

Mike goes on to explain that the reason people actually lose weight by eating 6 meals a day is that they are eating less calories… that’s it!

Believe me when I say that those in the health and fitness community recognize Mike O’Donnell as the go to guy when it comes to Intermittent Fasting. Just take a look at how Rusty Moore of The Fitness Black Book views Mike’s take on IF.

So how does Intermittent Fasting help you? Mark Sisson of Mark’s Daily Apple sums it up quite nicely:

“A recent article in the American Journal of Clinical Nutrition gives a great overview of these benefits which include decreases in blood pressure, reduction in oxidative damage to lipids, protein and DNA, improvement in insulin sensitivity and glucose uptake, as well as decreases in fat mass.”

If you are curious to know more about intermittent fasting, I would recommend reading Eat Stop Eat by Brad Pilon. It’s the most comprehensive look at how intermittent fasting will:

Help You Lose Weight, Burn Stubborn Body Fat, and Naturally Boost Growth Hormone - All While Preserving Your Lean Muscle and Metabolism”

IF is the way to go. I gained so much more time back in my life and I am no longer a slave to my food. Life is just life as opposed to meals and the short time to get from meal to meal.

    Andrew,

I have tried a few different variations of Intermittent Fasting…I like Eat Stop Eat the best. It is a flexible and realistic way to say lean year-round. Craig Ballantyne of Turbulence Training endorses Eat Stop Eat as well. Great recommendation!

    Hey Rusty,

Thanks for the comment! I have noticed that intermittent fasting has really freed me up a lot. By the way, I really like your two part post on Turbulence Training. I’ve been trying the non-competing supersets and I’ve been really impressed with how quickly I can get in and out of the gym now!

    Andrew,

Good stuff. IF is so freeing….no more worrying about food all day. Just eat when it feels natural. That and if you have a bad day of eating….IF on the next day can balance it out with a calorie averaging process. Makes me really appreciate what I eat now and enjoy it….vs the old days of being bloated and just shoveling food down for a fear of some catabolic state (thanks bodybuilding magazines!).

Gandhi looks like he could do with a good meal!! lol

I don’t mean to cause a stir here, but Jeez, one minute its eat 5-7x per day, the next minute its dont eat at all!!??

Whenever these ‘experts’ come out with totally rational and scientific reasons why we should or shouldn’t eat something we buy into it. Cos usually there’s some book to buy!! Or some nutritional supplement!! And invariably, maybe 2 years or 20 years later, their theory is proved incorrect, or at best, inaccurate…………Rosemary Connelly was my hero until I found out that she stripped my body off essential fats and caused the onset of premature arthritis…………lol (I’m joking!, but you get my point….)

The Paleo of today is the Dallio of tomorrow!!! Just like 7 meals of yesterday is the 0 meals of today………

Great post Andrew. I love your broad spectrum of info……

    Hey Tusc,

You’re telling me!! Imagine my chagrin when I feel like I’ve got it down cold… I know the ropes… I know the moves. Then all of a sudden, it’s “Hey, looks like this works better!”. But that occurs because it’s a constant learning process, reevaluation of data, and testing methods which weed out extraneous variables. But, like you mentioned, I try to analyze each and every approach at weight loss, figure out what it does well, locate the possible pitfalls and present it as clearly as I can.

Remember, if I didn’t care about my readers, I wouldn’t be constantly looking for better information to help.

God, it never entered my head that you didnt care about your readers Andrew. If I sounded accusatory toward you personally, then please accept my apologies xx

My only point really was that I used to be a sucker for every health/diet craze going, but I’ve learnt to sit back and expect that science will progress and what’s cutting edge reading today, is probably gathering cobwebs tomorrow!

That isnt to say that these things don’t work (most of them do!!), only that they evolve (at best) and could be dangerous to your long term health (at worst)!!

Besides, you get more cynical as you get older…..lol

    Hey Tom,

Believe me, I was the poster boy for the 5-7 meals a day because it helped me understand portion control and daily caloric intake/deficit which lead me to my weight loss years ago. But there is some very compelling evidence for IF. I’m currently employing the principles of IF and I will post on my results shortly… but they’re looking good so far!

I’m more sceptical about eating 6 times per day helping to lose weight, but perhaps the “less calories consumed” theory has some truth to it.

I only have positive things to say about intermittent fasting. For people who are worried about being hungry or too low blood sugar, I have some blog posts on the subject if you’re interested:

    Hi Andrew,

Great discussion regarding IF. I have done the 5-7 meals a day and then it was revolutionary to think there was another way. I don’t have a dogmatic view of either. I just couldn’t do the 5-7 meals as ascribed in bodybuilding. Too little room for error as far as caloric control/portion control. In the mini meals, I found myself bingeing at the end of the day. When I read about IF on Rusty Moore’s site http://www.fitnessblackbook.com, I figured if nothing else, even if I did binge, I would still be ahead of where I was at, since I wasn’t also doing the mini meals AND bingeing.
Long story short, I was surprised that I was able to do a 24 hour stretch. I was such a slave to the mini meal routine that it was freeing not to have to plan and pack so many plastic containers, cooler, and ice packs. Since I travel a lot, you can imagine how many foods I was carrying including a cooler on the plane, etc. It felt empowering during the fast to really feel hunger and not feed the hunger until I was good and ready to give in. I would like to see a post on how to break the fast so that you don’t binge eat. I know that is the body’s natural response to being starved. Initially, I felt leaner after IF-ing, but mentally I began justifying eating no-no foods since it was calories in vs. calories out, right? Mike OD would call it IFOC (IF-ing on crap). I didn’t factor in that by choosing the wrong foods, I was creating a monster that would have to be tamed later. My bingeing left me painfully stuffed and ready to IF again. Probably not the best tactic and could lead to an eating disorder and vicious cycle on my part. I still don’t discount the fact that IF is a great option and one I have not given up on. I just want to work it into my lifestyle in a healthy way. I just did a fast yesterday and breaking the fast was much more controlled. Any responses or sharing of experiences on breaking a fast would be appreciated. I have a huge sweet tooth that is part of the problem. Thanks!

Believe me when I say that the information on Rusty’s site is worth it’s weight in goal! The guy’s got it down. But I think that it’s a good idea to have experience using both 5 meals a day and IF. Truth is, you can make it work either way, it’s just about the calories and what you eat.

I’m in the process of doing a break the fast post, so keep your fingers crossed cause it’s coming soon!

      Thanks for the comments!

      All the Best,
