The Secret Behind Obama’s Fitness Success
Posted on Jan 13, 2009 by Andrew in Celebrity Diets & Workouts .
We are on the brink of a new era. President elect Barack Obama will usher our country into that era. I’m not talking about a change in our domestic policy, foreign relations or even the revitalization of our financial institutes. I’m talking about a renewed sense of importance for leading an active, healthy lifestyle! And what better way to do so than leading by example.
President Obama’s Emphasis On Staying Active
At one time or another, we have all uttered the phrase ‘I just don’t have time to workout’. It’s true, we all lead very busy lives. But what if I told you that President elect Obama got in better shape during the campaign year than the year before? (That’s Fit):
Daily Mail has a photo snapped of President-elect Obama while on vacation, and he’s looking kind of ripped…
When you compare his abs from 2007 to 2008, it appears that in the midst of his hectic and stressful campaign, Barack Obama has toned up. Whatever your opinion of our up and coming President is, you have to admit that’s inspirational. If he can find the time to get more fit while campaigning to be President of the United States, than surely the rest of us can find time, too.”
That’s a really good point. If a candidate on the presidential campaign trail can stay in shape, so can you! So what’s his secret? Well, for one thing, it’s all in the family! (FitSugar):
With schedules more hectic than most people could imagine, the Obamas have managed to make fitness a priority — the president-elect even found time for shooting hoops on election day.
In an interview for the November issue of Men’s Health, Barack Obama said, ‘Most of my workouts have to come before my day starts. There’s always a trade-off between sleep and working out. Usually I get in about 45 minutes, six days a week. I’ll lift one day, do cardio the next.’”
This is a sentiment shared by the entire Obama family, and Barack leads the way. So how does he workout you ask? (FitSugar):
Obama covers his bases in the gym, dividing his time between weight-lifting and a cardio rotation including a stationary bike, elliptical, and treadmill.”
But no matter how our future President works out, one thing is for sure: he plans to continue an active lifestyle in spite of his critics (Men’s Health):
But what about the yammering that being fit is elitist?
‘I don’t think most people think it is. It’s just the nature of the politics that [pundits] need something to talk about. A tried-and-true strategy in politics is to try and take a strength and turn it into a weakness.’”
We should be proud to have a President that puts health and fitness as paramount in his daily life. Hopefully Obama will be an example for all Americans that living in the rat race is no excuse for leading a sedentary lifestyle!
Tomorrow, we’ll take a look at his diet in the conclusion of Celebrity Diets & Workouts with President Obama!
Here’s the link to President Obama’s diet!

Guess Obama’s not only for your mama anymore. Also for your sisters, brothers, aunt’s, uncles and kiddo’s!
Love the spotlight on a new icon… I’m also excited he’s listening to the people about issues on things like the FDA and the USDA, I’m hoping for changes- even if they’re little, in the way that our government controls our food.

Obama truly is inspirational on a lot of planes - this one was new to me, but hell, it doesn’t even surprise me. The man just radiates power and energy
Good post, I am really starting to like this blog: a great mixture between “fun” (this), workouts, nutrition and general advice.
Keep it up,
Alex

@ BEE: McCain said it to be disparaging, but I think it’s just what America needs… Obama is a celebrity!! And one that knows his stuff while maintaining a healthy lifestyle that we should all aspire to. Also, check out this link that Jimmy from Livin’ La Vida Low Carb did:

@ Alex Kay: That’s really my goal. I want to show people that being healthy and fit is a wonderful lifestyle. Most people think that eating healthy takes the flavor out of life, and that just isn’t true. I’ve never been more happy in my whole life, and that’s cause I’m eating more healthy than ever and working out properly and consistently!
Thanks for the great comments, please keep ‘em coming!
All the Best,
Andrew

Obama is a great man in many ways. I’m reading his memois at the mo. His dedication to health and fitness not only gives him role model status but also will guide his decisions on certain policies. This can’t be a bad thing. Hopefully he’ll ban McDonalds!!!
Loved the way he went straight to the gym after he got elected. I would imagine gym memberships increased that day!

Great post as always Andrew. I don’t think that not having time to exercise is really a valid excuse. People who use this excuse always seem to have time to stay in bed for an extra hour in the mornings, watch their favourite TV programs or play their favourite video games. If you don’t want to make fitness a priority in your life then that’s fine but this should never be used as an excuse. You can always make time for the things you really want to do. If being fit and healthy is one of them you will find the time to exercise.

@ Tusc: I know it made me want to go to the gym… oh, wait… that’s everyday! Still, I went extra hard that day!!
@ Tom: Well put bud. With the information we now have on how to get an effective workout, there’s no excuse other than the priority excuse.
Thanks for the comments!

I’m glad to see our new president is fit, however I wish he would come out and show the country he is quitting smoking too. Fitness & smoking are not a good match.

He says that he will quit… but only time will tell. I agree, smoking has got to be one of the first things to go when trying to get healthy.
All the Best,
